 2017 Preview

R.A. Hubbard finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year R.A. Hubbard finished sixth in Class 1A region seven with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The defense allowed a team record 378 points last season.

R.A. Hubbard was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Chiefs want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.5 points a game.

R.A. Hubbard struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 37.8 points a game.

Since 2010, R.A. Hubbard has gone a combined 47-34. Their 58.0% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 1A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, R.A. Hubbard has managed to compile a record of 202-107. Their 65.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 1A and 57th in the AHSAA. The Chiefs have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time.

Nicholas Vinson leaves R.A. Hubbard after eight seasons with a 47-34 record. His last two teams finished with a 6-14 record. It was the first back-to-back losing seasons since 1974-75.

Mac Hampton, a former assistant coach at Lawrence County, will take over the football program this fall.

The R.A. Hubbard Chiefs will play in Class 1A region seven during the 2017 season. The Chiefs have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 68-46 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 1A and 22nd in the AHSAA.

With a little luck and some improvement, the Chiefs could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season. R.A. Hubbard missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2017.

The Chiefs open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Cherokee on Thursday, August 24 at W.L. Harris Stadium. Last year the Cherokee Indians finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in second place in Class 1A region eight. The Indians lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Sumiton Christian by a score of 49-28.

R.A. Hubbard and Cherokee have met a total of 16 times on the football field. The Chiefs have a 9-6-1 record against the Indians. They last met in 2016 with R.A. Hubbard winning by a score of 25-22.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

In 1969 the two point conversion was adopted for play following a touchdown. Until that time all conversions were worth one point.
